CURSO DE VERANO EN BUXTON 2012

Dado el gran éxito que tuvo nuestro curso de inglés de verano el año pasado, una vez más volvemos a realizarlo en Buxton. Podéis echar un vistazo a las actividades que realizamos el año pasado dentro de este blog. Seguro que os animais a uniros a nuestro curso!

El curso tiene lugar en Buxton, Derbyshire. Es el pueblo principal del Peak District y un buen centro turístico. Fue fundado por los romanos, convirtiéndose más adelante en un balneario de moda, cuya popularidad condujo a la construcción de muchos de sus hoteles, su elegante “Crescent” y los “Pavillion Gardens”. La Ópera también data de esta época y sus festivales tienen lugar en julio y en agosto. Con una población de 21.000 habitantes aproximadamente. Nuestros cursos se desarrollan en este encantador pueblo desde 1975. Buxton es pequeño pero con unas condiciones excepcionales por dos motivos: su belleza y su historia. Está situado en el corazón del Peak District, en una de las zonas más montañosas de Inglaterra. El centro del pueblo es un gran parque de 23 acres con bonitos jardines, un lago, parque infantil, piscina, cafeterías y un campo de mini-golf. En los meses de verano se celebra el festival de las Artes, con importantes conciertos y obras de teatro, además de la feria con atracciones para los más jóvenes y del carnaval (www.visitbuxton.co.uk).

1. Clases:
Examen de entrada y de salida del curso.
12 horas de clases por semana durante cuatro días a la semana con profesores nativos, el quinto día se dedica a la excursión de día completo y el sábado y domingo libre con la familia anfitriona. Y 4 horas semanales de tutoría individual destinadas a la orientación y formación para la obtención del certificado del Trinity College London.

2. Familias anfitrionas:
Un solo alumno por familia, salvo petición exclusiva por los padres o tutores legales.
Alojamiento en régimen de pensión completa durante cuatro semanas.
Edades admitidas de 10 a 17 años. (Para otras edades por favor consultad disponibilidad).

3. Programa de actividades:
Una excursión de día completo a la semana.
Una actividad recreacional y/o cultural por semana.
Seis horas de deporte a la semana. Natación, tenis, mini-golf, baloncesto y yoga.
Jinkana de bienvenida.
Fiesta de despedida.

4. Material escolar:
Bolsa mochila, T-shirt, carnet del curso, plano de la ciudad, guía del estudiante, tres etiquetas para las maletas, cuaderno archivador con bolígrafo, hoja informativa con los datos de la familia inglesa, programa de actividades a realizar durante el curso, informe del aprovechamiento del curso y certificado de asistencia.

5. Tutor/Monitor:
Monitores bilingües durante toda la duración del programa que acompañará a los alumnos en el viaje en todo momento

6. Seguro:
“Multi-asistencia” en viaje con “Mapfre” o compañía similar.

VARONA'S FAMILY IN HALLOWEEN WEEK

Un año más hemos celebrado Halloween con nuestros alumnos. Como veréis somos una familia muy integrada.... Nos gustaría que además de divertiros aprendierais la historia de Halloween y de por qué se le llama "Jack o Lantern" a la calabaza.

Nuestra intención era que nuestros alumnos aprendieran vocabulario relacionado con Halloween, contaran y escucharan historias, jugaran con puzzles y crucigramas y sobre todo que aprendieran divirtiéndose. Y a juzgar por las imágenes creo que lo hemos conseguido.

CURSO DE VERANO: BUXTON DIA 24 y 25

Buxton, 20 y 21 de Julio 2011

Martes 20 Julio: Al lado de nuestro centro han abierto una tienda de pasteles y cafés, lo que nosotros llamaríamos una cafetería muy pija y coqueta, y por supuesto la hemos estrenado en el recreo con unas "cakes", son magdalenas cubiertas de crema, espectaculares... En el fondo ha sido como una continuación de las clases porque las profesoras Sue y Sara han estado con nuestros alumnos charlando de una forma más informal que en las aulas.

Miércoles 21 Julio: La excursión de hoy consistía en una visita turística a Castleton, a unas cuevas en barca y a una fábrica familiar de chocolates. Las cuevas, Speedwell Caves, eran básicamente un canal estrecho y angosto que hemos cruzado en barca. La claustrofobia, los gritos y las risas han aflorado desde el principio al fin.... ¿Quién quiere repetir?

Para contrastar esta experiencia hemos visitado una fábrica de chocolates muy familar que se encuentra en la mitad de un bosque en medio del Peak District, escondida entre árboles y entre montañas. El dueño, Dave, nos ha explicado la historia del chocolate, el origen actual y el proceso de creación de los más maravillosos bombones. Esta pequeña fábrica hace chocolates para Harrods en Londres. Y luego nos ha dado la oportunidad de crear nuestros propios chocolates con moldes, y de envolverlos y llevárnoslos. Uhmmmm.... deliciosa experiencia!!!!

Tuesday 20th July: Next to the Buxton 4 Youth centre a new cake shop has been opened, Claire's Cakes. It's really elegant. We wanted to try it out and we went with our students and teacher to have a coffe and some delicious cakes, which were absolutely wonderful. We highly recommend you to go to this place to have a coffee and a cake and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. Our teachers Sara and Sue enjoyed this informal experience of teaching sharing a coffee with our students.

Wednesday 21st July: We visited Castleton. It is a village near Buxton where we visited the village, the caves and an experience chocolate "factory". In fact it used to be a farm and now it is a place where Dave, his owner makes lovely chocolates, and shares his knowledge with visitors. They make handmade chocolates for Harrods. don't miss the opportunty to book for a family trip in the Cocoadance.

About the caves it was great fun, we went to the Speedwell Cave which consist of a series of tunnels. You must go on boat all the time and you get a bit claustrophobia in there, some of our students shouted out loud and all in all laugh all round.... Who wants to repeat the experience?

Buxton 17 y 18 de Julio 2011

¡Se acabó el buen tiempo! Todo el domingo y lunes sin parar de llover. En Inglaterra llueve tanto que hasta tienen distintas palabras para los tipos de lluvia: showers, heavy showers, drizzle, downpour, raining cats and dogs, vamos una gran variedad, total para decir que llueve. Este domingo algunos han ido a Manchester con sus familias de compras, otros al cine, otros en casa con visitas familiares, otros haciendo barbacoas, -aunque llueva, no pasa nada-, de todo un poco.

Hoy lunes de nuevo a estudiar. Después de las clases y de hacer un poco de deporte hemos vuelto a practicar para el examen de Trinity. Al ser un grupo muy compacto y unido, hemos contado con la colaboración de los alumnos de grados superiores que muy generosamente han estado practicando con los de grados inferiores. Hemos hecho cientos de combinaciones: alumnos con alumnos, profesoras con alumnos, alumnos individualmente......, ¡que por practicar no sea!

Son las 6,30 de la tarde y sigue lloviendo......

Buxton 17th & 18th July 2011

Good weather is over! It hasn't stopped raining for 2 days. In English there are different types of rain: showers, heavy showers, drizzle, downpour, raining cats and dogs, in a nutshell "rain".

On Sunday some of the students went with their families to Manchester, some others to the cinema, to visit some relatives, even doing barbacues, though it rained.

Today Monday, they went on studying for the Trinity exam. As we have a wonderful group of students, some of the most advanced students offered to help the lower grades. We had a wide variety of combinations: students with students, teachers with students, students on their own..., it won't be for lack of trying!

It's 6,30 and it is still raining....

Buxton 14, 15 y 16 Julio 2011

Ya estamos entrando en la recta final, con muchas horas de estudio intenso y prácticas para el examen del próximo día 22. Dentro de nuestros cursos intentamos integrar a nuestros alumnos lo más posible en la vida diaria de Buxton. Algunos han sido elegidos para presentar el talón de la fundación del centro en el que estudiamos, a la dirección del mismo les agradecemos este gesto.
Hoy, sábado hemos estado en la biblioteca practicando los "topics" con nuestros alumnos y después el merecido descanso: el festival.

Queremos dar las gracias a las familias anfitrionas que han invitado a nuestros alumnos a participar activamente en las carrozas y en el desfile, así como de voluntarios para colectar dinero para organizaciones caritativas y fomentar el teatro alternativo de la zona, llamado "Fringe". Ha sido muy emocionante verles colaborando y disfrutando del carnaval. Creemos que las imágenes dicen más que mil palabras.

Buxton 14th, 15th 16th July 2011

We are coming into the final stage of the course. We are having long hours of intensive study and taking mock exams for the Trinity exam on 22nd July. We always try to involve our students as much as possible in Buxton's life and activities. Some of them were chosen to hold the Buxton 4 Youth cheque, an organisation that offers a wide range of services for younsters in Buxton and the place where our students study. We would like to thank them for everything they have done for us.

Today, Saturday 16th, we have been studying in the Buxton's library and after so much work, all the students went to the festival.

We would like to thank the host families for involving our students in the carnival, Buxton's main event of the year. Some of our students had collection boxes, collected money for charity and felt that they had really participated in the carnival. They all had a wonderful time.

Buxton 12 y 13 de Julio 2011

Martes 12: Hoy hemos visitado un colegio de secundaria "Buxton Community School". Nuestros alumnos han estado en dos clases haciendo una actividad de intercambio cultural. Ambos grupos han estado intercambiando costumbres de cada país. Ha sido una buena oportunidad para conocer cómo viven y estudian los alumnos de Buxton. Una de las cosas que les ha gustado saber es que aquí no llevan tantos deberes para casa como en España. Lamentablemente no hemos podido hacer fotos, ya que no se puden hacer fotos dentro de colegios al ser menores. Después hemos ido al parque que como sigue sin llover, crucemos los dedos, hemos podido comer el "pack lunch" en nuestro querido parque "Pavilion Gardens". Y finalmente deportes en "Fairfield". Día intenso, pero muy constructivo. Por la tarde a estudiar con la familia a casita....

Miércoles 13: Excursión al castillo de Warwick. Este castillo tiene más de 1100 años. Se remonta a la época de Ethelfleda, hija de Alfredo el Grande, quien ordenó la construcción de una fortaleza para proteger al poblado de los invasores daneses. Actualmente pertenece a los duques de Warwick y se utiliza como atracción turística de interés cultural y de ocio. Dentro del castillo hemos visitado una torre dedicada al Mago Merlín y las mazmorras, donde hemos podido disfrutar de juicios a nuestras monitoras, torturas e incluso extirpaciones al monitor masculino, jajaja, muuuyyyyy divertido. También nos ha explicado un guía la historia de los reyes y mientras los alumnos disfrutaban de las demás atracciones del castillo, los monitores nos hemos tomado el té y codeado con la realeza, e incluso nos han ofrecido sus aposentos para dormir la siesta.

Buxton 12th and 13th July 2011:

Tuesday 12th: Today we have visited a secondary school called "Buxton Community School". Our students have been in two classes sharing a across-cultural activity. Both groups have been talking about national customs and cultural activities. It has been a great opportunity for both to know each other. Spanish students have learnt that English students do less homework at home and more activites are done in the school. We couldn't take pictures since it is not allowed to take pictures in the school. Afterwards, we have been enjoying our pack lunch in Pavilion Gardens, it's our favourite park. Later, sports in Fairfied Sports centre. It's been a very intensive day!!! In the evening, we have gone home to study with the host families, who are wonderful.

Wednesday 13th: Trip to Warwick castle. Its history stretches back almost 1,100 years. In 914 AD Ethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Great, ordered the building of a rampart to protect the small hill top settlement of Warwick from Danish invaders. Nowadays, the castle belongs to the earl of Warwick, Guy Greville, and it is used as a tourist and cultural attaction.

Inside the castle, we visited the Merlin Tower and the dungeons. The tutors acted as prisoners; the male monitor got tortured, one of the tutors got sentenced to death for witchcraft... hahahaha!!!! very exciting. A guide explained to us the history of the castle. Meanwhile our students were visiting the rest of the castle, the monitors were socialising with the royal family. The offered us their chambers to sleep siesta.

Buxton 11 Julio 2011:

Ya hemos empezado con el stress de los "topic" y los "subject areas". Hoy hemos hecho la segunda ronda de preguntas de topic... uhmmmm, queda mucho por trabajar..... Después deportes y relax en el parquecito que hacía una tarde estupenda con mucho sol. Como véis no éramos los únicos que tomábamos el sol!!! Nuestro parque se llama Pavilion Gardens y cuando no llueve es nuestra mejor terapia de grupo.
Buxton July 11th 2011:
We have already began to ask students the "topics" and the "subject areas" which has been a little stressful. Today has been the second rehearsal for the exam and.... uhmmmmm, we still have lot of work to be done..... After doing sports we have relaxed in the park. It has been a lovely sunny afternoon. As you can see there were some other people on the sun!!! Our park is called Pavillion Gardens and when it is not raining it's our best group therapy.

Buxton 9 y 10 de Julio 2011

Acabamos de llegar al ecuador del curso. Ahora empieza la cuenta atrás para el examen de Trinity y volver a España. El sábado estuvimos en la biblioteca de Buxton, es estupenda porque tiene zonas para leer, para ver videos, ordenadores y mesas para poder tener tutorias con los profesores.

Hoy domingo hemos tenido que madrugar un poquito porque nuestros chicos tenían partido contra los ingleses, y claro ahí estaban todas nuestras chicas y una familia española que nos ha visitado para animar. Ha sido una experiencia estupenda ya que el partido ha sido con familias que nos alojan y con sus hijos. España ganó el partido. Pero lo mejor no ha sido el resultado sino el buen espíritu competitivo que han demostrado ambos equipos. Bien hecho chicos!!!

We are now just in the middle of the course. So we begin the countdown for the Trinity exam and to come back home to Spain. On Saturday we went to the Buxton Library. This library is great because it has a place for the youngest children, another part to read and watch videos, we can also use the computers and what is more, we have study areas for the tutors and students.

Today, Sunday, we got up early since our children had a football match against the local host families and some friends. All of us have been wearing our flags painted on the faces to cheer on our teams. It has been a wonderful experience to be repeated. Spain won the match, but that was not as important as the competitive spirit that both teams have shown. Well done both teams!!!

BUXTON 7 y 8 Junio 2011

Los días pasan y ya nos vamos acercando al ecuador del curso, pero seguimos con el mismo ánimo y fuerzas para estudiar y divertirnos que al principio.

Hoy ha tocado sesión de cine: "La Linterna Verde" y "Kung Fu Panda", 20 personas han visto la primera y 3 la segunda, respectivamente, adivinad quienes!!!!

Cuando hemos salido del cine, las palomitas que quedaban se han repartido y creo que había algo ya de hambre!!! La generosidad es una de nuestras mayores virtudes!!!!

The time flies. We are getting closer to the middle of the course. However, students are still working hard and really encouraged to go on studying and enjoying this course.

Today we have been to the cinena to see "The Green Lantern" and "Kung Fu Panda", 20 people have seen the first and 3 the second one, respectively. Guess who????

When we have left the cinema, just waiting for the train our students have shared some popcorns . Would you say they were hungry??? Generosity is one of our strongest virtues!!!! :-)

Manchester 6 Julio 2011

Día muy intenso en Mancheter de lluvia y museos. Hemos estado en el University Manchester Museum, donde hemos podido ver momias, sarcófagos egipcios, animales disecados y vivos... toda una experiencia!!!

Nuestra hora de la comida ha sido grandiosa, todos sentaditos al sol y de repente en menos de 30 segundos: Lluvia!! Corriendo a refugiarnos en lo primero que hemos encontrado, que como veréis no es mucho.

Pero eso sí hemos hecho un montón de actividades interactivas dentro del MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry)

En conclusión un día lluvioso, maravilloso y al final soleado!!!!

The rain has been intense today in Manchester when we went to the Museums. We have been to the University Manchester Museum, where we have seen mummies, egyptians sarcofagos, dissected animals and also some of them alived... a total experience!!!

Our lunch time has been gorgeous, all of us were sitting in the sun when suddenly in less than 30 seconds we had a downpour!! As quickly as we could we sheltered where we could.

However we have done hundreds of interactive activities in the MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry).

All in all a rainy wonderful and eventually sunny day!!!!

CURSO DE VERANO: BUXTON DIA 9 y 10

Buxton 4 y 5 Julio 2011

Ya hemos entrado en la rutina, por las mañanas clases, comida, deportes, tiendas en Spring Garden, paseos por Pavilion Gardens....
Pero hoy martes, después de las clases las chicas y las profes más atrevidas nos hemos ido a un colegio de aquí "Harpur Hill Enfant and Primary school" a bailar sevillanas y a jugar con los niños y enseñarles a bailar. Tal ha sido el éxito que hemos tenido en infantil que nos han llamado de primaria y hemos actuado en 3 clases más!!!!
Los niños del colegio han hecho un poster con palabras españolas e inglesas como: hola, buenos días, gracias, por favor etc. y nos han dicho que ha sido el mejor show que han visto nunca. Así que todas estábamos muy orgullosas. El resto del grupo ha estado haciendo deporte y ensayando las obras de teatro para la fiesta de despedida.

Buxton 4th/5th July 2011

We are already doing our routine such as classes, pack lunch, sports, shppping in Spring Gardens, long walks along Pavilion Gardens....
But today we had an exception, after the classes the bravest female students and teachers have been to a school called "Harpur Hill Enfant and Primary School" to dance sevillanas and to play with the children and teach them to dance. The show has been so successful that we went into 3 other classes of primary school!!!
The children in the school have done a poster with Spanish and English words, such as: hola, buenos días, gracias , por favor, etc. Some of them has told us it has been the best show they have ever seen. We were very proud.

BUXTON 3 JUNIO 2011:

FANTÁSTICO FIN DE SEMANA CON CALOR!!!!

Hace años que no teníamos un fin de semana tan estupendo. No ha llovido, ha hecho sol, con temperatura media, 20ºC.

Practicamente nos hemos pasado todo el fin de semana en la calle disfrutando de los parques y las calles llenas de gente.

El sábado algunos estuvimos en la biblioteca y en Spring Gardens, nuestra calle peatonal favorita de compras. Y hoy domingo gran variedad: misa, jardines, compras, visitas a familiares, etc...

BUXTON 1 JULIO 2011:

¿En qué estará tan concentrada nuestra profe? ¿O se está tirando de los pelos? ¿Tal vez una siestecita? Os aseguro que no es lo que parece....

Bueno dejemos los acertijos y os cuento el día de hoy: Por la mañana tuvieron clases y era el día de entrega del borrador de los "topic", que por supuesto todos han entregado ya que como véis están en su merecido premio: la bolera. Y después de una hamburguesa con patatas que mejor que echar una partidita de baile y snooker.

Buxton - 30 Junio 2011

Después de tener unos cuantos chubascos esta mañana, el clima se calmó y tuvimos una tarde estupenda, con sol y todo!!! Creo que la foto describe perfectamente el tiempo que teníamos exactamente a las 2,15 de la tarde.

Pero esto no ha impedido que nos quitara las ganas de estirar los músculos y desgastar nuestro "pack lunch" !!!!! Unas cuantas carreras y flexiones y a correrrrrr.

Y esta tarde todo el mundo a casita a estudiar, a preparar el "topic", si no quieren tener problemas con algunas las profes......., o quedarse sin bolera mañana......

ALTON TOWERS 29 JUNE 2011

Hoy hemos pasado todo el día en Alton Towers. Alton Towers es un parque temático en el que independientemente de la edad todo el mundo puede disfrutar de un día fantástico tanto en las atracciones más atrevidas como Oblivion, Nemesis, 13, Air, uhhhhh "Scary!!!!" o para los menos atrevidos Squirrels, Tractors, Katanga Cannon Rapid, etc.
En general ha sido un día fantástico y con la suerte de que no nos ha caído ni una gota!

CURSO DE VERANO: BUXTON DIA 3

¡¡¡¡Qué bien hace fresquito y no llueve!!!

Hoy ha sido un día intenso de clases y de deporte. Como véis todo el mundo está centradísimo en los estudios y disfrutando del deporte que es muy sano.

Por supuesto que tampoco nos ha faltado nuestra horita de "shopping" en Spring Gardens, donde tenemos el tan amado "KFC" con sus deliciosas ¡¡¡"pop corn chicken"!!! Verdad chic@s?? Y que conste que yo todavía no lo he probado.
Y comer..... echadle un vistazo a uno de los "pack lunch" . Bueno mañana vamos a Alton Towers, uno de los mejores parques de atracciones de Europa, sin menospreciar a ninguno eh!!! Espero tener fuerzas para poder compartir nuestras experiencias.

CURSO DE VERANO: BUXTON DIA 1

PRIMER DIA:

Después de reponernos del viaje, y del calor que nos hemos encontrado en Inglaterra, hoy ya estamos todos centrados en el curso.
Esta tarde hemos estado haciendo una ruta por toda la ciudad, recogiendo datos históricos sobre Buxton y visitando residencias de ancianos. Toda una experiencia!!!!

Esperemos que esta noche llueva y nos refresque el ambiente, luego nos quejaremos de tanta lluvia.....

¡¡¡¡¡NOS VAMOS A BUXTON!!!!

A través de este blog podréis seguir todo lo que hacemos este verano en Buxton en el curso de verano.
Seguro que ya tenéis preparadas las maletas, y pesadas, abriendo y cerrando, quitando un jersey porque os pasais de los 20k. No os preocupéis todos estamos igual, abre, cierra, pon, quita, sustituye.... Mirando la lista para ver si lo llevamos todo:
- Pasaporte + Tarjeta Embarque + Autorización para viajar
- Tarjeta Sanitaria.
- Dinero de bolsillo en libras esterlinas (pounds)
- Maleta para facturar que no pese más de 20 kilos.
- Maletín de mano o mochila con las medidas reglamentarias (No más de 10 k)

Recordad llevar la camiseta del curso puesta!!!

Most people are under the impression that to be successful, you have to be arrogant and up yourself. Nothing could be further from the truth. According to dictionary.com, the definition of humble is "not proud or arrogant; modest: to be humble although successful". It's a very under rated quality in the sports and management world these days. As the definition says, you can be humble, yet successful. Do you agree with this definition?

Most of us have amazing stories about that day when we ate out!!!!. Eating out is one of our favourite activities both summer and winter time. Different restaurants come with different cuisines, customs and price ranges as well as different menu styles. A menu is the most visible and most important part of a restaurant's concept, indeed it is its face to the world. The menu of a fast-food restaurant will differ dramatically from that of a fine-dining restaurant and not just because of the food. Last but not least the atmosphere, decor and type of clients.

Traditional Drinks in England

Britain is a tea-drinking nation. Every day we drink 165 million cups of the stuff and each year around 144 thousand tons of tea are imported.

Tea in Britain is traditionally brewed in a warmed china teapot, adding one spoonful of tea per person and one for the pot. Most Britons like their tea strong and dark, but with a lot of milk.

Spanish Tapas

Tapas are Spain's appetizers and are eaten anytime of the day or night. These little dishes can make a meal on their own! Tapas are such a big part of the culture that there is even a verb tapear, which means "to eat tapas.

La Tortilla Espanola - the Spanish Omelet. It is the best-loved and most popular dish in Spain, served at home and in cafes and bars. It can be eaten for dinner or as a tapa. With only 4 essential ingredients, it is not a difficult dish to make.

We are an English group from Varona's Institute. We come to this school on Tuesdays and Thrusdays from 5 to 7 to learn English. We are 13-15 years old. We are Spanish but there is one girl from Peru. Our teacher is called Ascen. We do many activities, for example in Halloween we dress up and we have a party in English and at christmas we sing Christmas carols. We like listening to music, going to parties, drawing, dancing, singing and doing sports. In this school we use the computers to learn English, and we also do other activities such as listening, speaking, writing and readings. We will introduce ourselves in the comments.
